One of the hardest decisions that a flight instructor has to make is how much oversight to give to a student pilot after their first solo flight.

Flight instructors are required to endorse the logbook of a student pilot prior to every solo flight. A flight instructor is expected to meet with the student, review their planned flight, discuss with the student what plans the student have should a problem arise in flight, and determine whether the student is fit to fly.

These pre-solo sessions not only cover the instructor should something happen, but more importantly, when done constructively, instills in the student the ability the skills to exercise good aeronautical decision making.
